New-Tall-DeviceThe TALL Learner

The TALL (Thinking and Learning for Life) Learner philosophy is central to everything we do at Heathcote Valley School. It provides us with the framework to develop students and staff in a range of attributes and attitudes. The original TALL Learner was established in 2005, and was redeveloped to integrate with the revised New Zealand Curriculum in 2009.

Children are regularly encouraged to reflect on their actions, behaviour and learning with reference to the TALL Learner. As a school, we then celebrate the children’s TALL Learner success at our two weekly TALL Learner assemblies and through the school’s newsletter.

We have the following TALL Learner focuses for each of the terms:
Term 1 - Respect and Community
Term 2 - Communication and Motivation
Term 3 - Thinking and Inquiry
Term 4 - Excellence

The TALL Learner Assemblies

At each of the fortnightly TALL Learner assemblies, two children per class (some smaller classes will only have one)  are acknowledged for their success on meeting the TALL Learner attributes and attitudes that we are focussing on for that term. They receive a write up in the school’s newsletter and at the assembly they are awarded a TALL Learner certificate, indicating the reason why they are receiving it, a photo that they place on the WALL of TALL, and a wrist band that corresponds to the colour of the TALL attribute that they have succeeded in.

At the last assembly of the term,  we will also celebrate the TALL Learners of the Term. They will receive a mention on this website, a TALL Learner certificate, indicating the reason why they are receiving it, a photo that they place on the WALL of TALL, and a rainbow wrist band that shows that they have succeeded in a number of the TALL attributes and attitudes.

All parents and people offering support are warmly invited to the assemblies.
